The project was carried out in collaboration with the Earth Sciences department of the Aldo Moro University of Bari
In Altamura, in an abandoned quarry (Pontrelli locality) An area of 14,000 m2 has been estimated for the load-bearing surface, a deposit dating back to around 70 million years ago (Cretaceous) of over 20,000 well-preserved specimens was discovered of dinosaurs, organized into real tracks.
The project involved scanning footprints using aerial photogrammetry and close-range photogrammetry.
The study of the Altamura dinosaur track site (Puglia, southern Italy; ancient Campania) was conducted in 2019 to meticulously document its geological and paleontological characteristics. This led to the definition of the entire geothematic map and the identification of the ichnospecies present and theyr preservation.
This work is the first result of the project "Urgent interventions for the protection and conservation of dinosaur footprints and the paleosurface at the Pontrelli Quarry in Altamura (BA)".
